Premier League 2011/12 Most Frequent Tacklers

After 38 games and with the season completed, here is a list of the top 10 players to have made the most tackles during the 2011/12 Premier League season:

10. Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur) – 96 Tackles

The Tottenham Hotspur full back looks set to miss Euro 2012 with an ankle injury picked up in the final game of the Premier League season in a 2-0 victory over Fulham. The right back had been having an excellent season, including being named the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Kyle Walker attempted 96 tackles during his first season as a regular at Tottenham, off the back of loan spells at Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa the previous season. Walker won 59% of his ground duels and 60% of his aerial duels. He even scored with both of his (long range) shots on target.

9. Marouane Fellaini (Everton) – 99 Tackles

The battling Everton midfielder picked up 6 yellow cards this season. Enthusiastic to get involved with the action, whether it is tackling, passing or attacking goal from corners, only 8 players attempted more tackles than Marouane Fellaini this season.

Marouane Fellaini also battled in 436 ground duels this season, although only winning 50% of those. Only 7 more players were involved in more ground duels than the Belgian central midfielder this season.

8. Alex Song (Arsenal) – 100 Tackles

The Arsenal holding midfielder has been criticised for his lack of positional discipline, which has seen the Cameroon international push forward and setup 11 goals in the league this season (only David Silva, Juan Mata and Antonio Valencia had more assists). However, the Arsenal midfielder has attempted 100 tackles this season and 66 interceptions.

On the flip side, only Mauro Formica (56) was dribbled past more times than Song (46) this season. Coincidentally, Arsenal also conceded the most goals they have ever conceded in a 38-game Premier League season.

7. Youssuf Mulumbu (West Bromwich Albion) – 101 Tackles

One of West Brom’s central midfielder’s under Roy Hodgson, Youssuf Mulumbu made over 100 tackle attempts this season. The Congolese player also made some of the most interceptions in the league (101).

A £200,000 signing from Paris Saint-Germain in 2009, Mulumbu has proven to be a good acquisition at the Hawthorns in a compact Baggies midfield.

6. Patrice Evra (Manchester United) – 104 Tackles

The Manchester United left back has made tackles up and down the left flank. Whilst he has received criticism from some of his own fans for constantly bombing forward, the French full back does lead the team in tackles this season.

Patrice Evra completed 86% of his passes this season but only 18% of his crosses. He also picked up 6 yellow cards.

5. Maynor Figueroa (Wigan Athletic) – 107 Tackles

The Honduran left back, who played in Wigan’s back three towards the end of the season when Roberto Martinez changed his side’s tactics. Maynor Figueroa is vulnerable to the occasional mistake, as is most of the Wigan side, but the defender leads his team in tackles.

Maynor Figueroa does his fair share of everything defensively; tackles, duels, winning headers and making numerous clearances. His 76% pass completion rate isn’t the best, but despite only attempting 32 crosses this past season, has completed two-fifths of them.

4. Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur) – 107 Tackles

The second Tottenham player and second Englishman on the list, Scott Parker has been diving into tackles ever since he arrived at White Hart Lane at the start of the season. The former Hammer won over the support immediately with his energy and bravery.

Scott Parker won 55% of his 307 ground duels this season, but only competed in 19 aerial duels despite playing in the centre of midfield. His simple passing game saw him complete 90% of over 1,700 attempts this season.

3. Joe Allen (Swansea City) – 110 Tackles

Standing at just 5’6”, the little Swansea City midfielder got stuck in during his debut Premier League season with 110 tackle attempts in the 36 games he played.

Joe Allen was very much apart of the short passing game that Swansea played in their first experience in the Premier League. The Welsh midfielder completed 91% of his 2,177 pass attempts. Only 9 players attempted more passes this season; 3 of those were his team mates (Ashley Williams, Angel Rangel and Leon Britton).

2. Moussa Dembélé (Fulham) – 113 Tackles

An impressive second season from Moussa Dembélé has seen him being linked with a move away from Craven Cottage and to bigger clubs. The Belgian played a more attacking role in his first season at Fulham under Mark Hughes. Martin Jol moved Dembélé into a central midfield role where he has continued to impress with his big, strong frame and technical ability.

Only Victor Moses was involved in more ground duels than Moussa Dembélé during the 2011/12 Premier League season. Only one player made more tackle attempts than the Fulham midfielder too. As well as being a combative midfielder, Dembélé has shown his flair throughout the season. However, the one-time Dutch Eredivisie champion only recorded 2 goals and 2 assists; something that could do with improving, especially if Clint Dempsey were to leave in the summer.

1. Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle United) – 116 Tackles

A player who offers his team both attacking threat and defensive cover, Yohan Cabaye made the most tackle attempts in the 2011/12 Premier League season. The French midfielder during his debut season in England has been very popular amongst fans and pundits alike.

Yohan Cabaye scored one of the best free kicks off the season in a 3-0 victory over Manchester United in January. The 2010/11 French Ligue 1 champion with Lille finished the Premier League season with 4 goals and 6 assists.
