2012-13 Premier League top tacklers

Here is a list of the top 10 players to make the most tackles during the 2012-13 Premier League season:

10. Robert Snodgrass (Norwich City) – 79 Tackles Won
Norwich City’s Robert Snodgrass chipped in with a couple of goals and assists from set pieces but the Scottish midfielder proved an important player in the Canaries midfield in winning back possession as he led the team in tackles.

9. Craig Gardner (Sunderland) – 80 Tackles Won
Nobody collected more yellow cards than Craig Gardner’s 10 in the Premier League this season. But the tough tackling midfielder who spent most of his season playing right back led his team in tackles won. When he wasn’t occupied winning the ball back or conceding free kicks, Gardner took penalty responsibilities for the Black Cats.

8. Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City) – 84 Tackles Won
The PFA Team of the Year right back, Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta produced the goods both in attack and defence for his side this season. The Argentinian led his team in tackles won as well as contributing to the odd goal and attacking play going forward.

7. Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur) – 84 Tackles Won
In his debut Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur’s Jan Vertonghen split time playing both left back and centre back, but it was the latter position the Belgian found his home and where he was named in the PFA Team of the Year.

6. Ramires (Chelsea) – 85 Tackles Won
The energetic Brazilian Ramires found himself playing both right wing and defensive midfield roles again this season for Chelsea. Never one to shy away from a challenge, it was Ramires’ enthusiasm and desire that got himself sent off for two yellow cards in the first half of their penultimate game of the season against Aston Villa.

5. Mohamed Diamé (West Ham United) – 89 Tackles Won
A contender for signing of the season was the acquisition made by Sam Allardyce to bring in Mohamed Diamé on a free transfer over the summer. Wigan Athletic’s failure to renew the Senegalese international’s contract was West Ham’s gain. Great at breaking play up on the edge of his own penalty area and springing a counter attack for the Hammers, Diamé also displayed his good technique and shooting ability this season.

4. Geoff Cameron (Stoke City) – 89 Tackles Won
Tony Pulis used American international Geoff Cameron as a utility player during his debut season in the Premier League. The summer arrival from Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo spent time in centre midfield and at left back before settling down at right back. During his first season with the Potters he picked up a few yellow cards and led the team in tackles.

3. Lucas Leiva (Liverpool) – 90 Tackles Won
The Brazilian midfielder was a welcome return to the Liverpool side last season after missing most of the previous through injury. Lucas did a good job in protecting the back four with his ball-winning skills in midfield.

2. Claudio Yacob (West Bromwich Albion) – 90 Tackles Won
West Brom’s Argentine summer arrival quickly formed a strong partnership with Youssouf Mulumbu early during his time at the Hawthorns, together protecting the back four very well. They weren’t so assured during the second half of the season but the former Racing Club player stuck a leg in on most opponents this season making an impressive 90 tackles.

1. Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton) – 109 Tackles Won
Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin led the way with 109 successful tackles this season as he won the ball back for his newly-promoted team back in the top flight for the first time since Harry Redknapp took them down in 2005.

The Frenchman has attracted attention from bigger clubs for his ball winning expertise in the centre of midfield that also saw him lead the league in interceptions.
