Arsène Wenger will take charge of an historic 1000th competitive game in charge of Arsenal on Saturday when his side faces Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Since taking charge of his first game in October 1996, the French manager has lifted 7 major trophies with the Gunners (3x Premier League, 4x FA Cup). Only Manchester United (17) and Chelsea (15) have won more major trophies in English football since Wenger joined Arsenal, and Liverpool as many. I’m not including the Community Shield or UEFA Super Cup as major trophies, although for once I am including the League Cup as ‘major’!
Arsenal have been playing in the UEFA Champions League for an incredible 16th consecutive season under Wenger – only Manchester United (18) and Real Madrid (17) are on longer consecutive streaks than the Gunners.
Fans have had their ups and downs during Wenger’s reign but having recently reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup where they are now expected to end a 9-year streak without a trophy, as well as putting up a valiant effort in the Premier League title race this season, fans are more optimistic this season than many of the previous few years.
