Manchester United’s youngest ever Premier League goalscorers

James Wilson’s brace against Hull City in Manchester United’s 3-1 victory on Tuesday on his full league debut made the English striker the fourth youngster player to score for the Red Devils in the Premier League.

10. Wayne Rooney vs Arsenal on 24/10/2004 at the age of 19 years, 0 months, 0 days

A £25.6 million signing from Everton after Euro 2004, Wayne Rooney made an instant impact on his debut for Manchester United by scoring a hat-trick against Fenerbahçe in the UEFA Champions League. After failing to score against Middlesbrough and Birmingham City in his first two Premier League appearances for United, Rooney broke his duck on his 19th birthday by scoring in a 2-0 victory over Arsenal. This was the game that ended the Gunners’ record 49-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

9. Ryan Giggs vs Nottingham Forest on 29/08/1992 at the age of 18 years, 9 months, 0 days

Ryan Giggs had already scored 5 goals in 40 league appearances for Manchester United in the Old Division before the creation of the Premier League. The Welsh winger opened his account in the fifth game of the inaugural Premier League season as United were 2-0 winners at Nottingham Forest, after winning just one of their first four matches.

8. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Portsmouth on 01/11/2003 at the age of 18 years, 8 months, 27 days

Manchester United’s first-ever Portuguese player signed from Sporting Club of Portugal in the summer of 2003 in a £12.24 million move. Given the prestigious number 7 shirt at Old Trafford, Ronaldo opened his Premier League account in his ninth match, coming on as a late substitute in a 3-0 victory over Portsmouth. He scored 4 goals in 29 matches that season and later went on to become the world’s most expensive player.

7. Giuseppe Rossi vs Sunderland on 15/10/2005 at the age of 18 years, 8 months, 14 days

After signing from Parma nearly a year before, Giuseppe Rossi made his Premier League debut for Manchester United as a late substitute in a 3-1 win at Sunderland during the 2005-06 season. 9 minutes later and he had scored. Rossi only made four further appearances in the league that season, not starting until the final game of the season and didn’t score again that season or play again after. Loan moves to Newcastle and Parma followed before the Italian international was sold to Villarreal for a reported £6.6 million in 2007.

6. Adnan Januzaj vs Sunderland on 05/10/2013 at the age of 18 years, 8 months, 0 days

Considered one of the very few successes under David Moyes’ management, Adnan Januzaj had made two substitute appearances in the Premier League before being handed his first start at Sunderland in October. Trailing 1-0 at half-time, the young Belgian scored twice in the second half to pull off a come-from-behind victory over the struggling Black Cats.

5. Nick Powell vs Wigan Athletic on 15/09/2012 at the age of 18 years, 5 months, 23 days

The Crewe teenager had helped his side win the League Two playoffs the following season before Sir Alex Ferguson brought Nick Powell to Manchester United a deal reportedly worth up to £6 million. Brought on as a late substitute in a 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic, Powell scored 12 minutes into his debut for the club. He only made one further Premier League appearance last season before being loaned out to Wigan Athletic in 2013-14.

4. James Wilson vs Hull City on 06/05/2014 at the age of 18 years, 5 months, 5 days

Ryan Giggs handed debuts to youngsters James Wilson and Tom Lawrence on Tuesday night before bringing himself on as a substitute in what is expected to be his last professional game at Old Trafford. The opposition was Hull City and James Wilson opened the scoring 31 minutes into his debut and scored again in the second half as United ran out 3-1 winners.

3. Rafael vs Arsenal on 08/11/2008 at the age of 18 years, 3 months, 30 days

Brazilian right-back Rafael initially arrived at Manchester United in January 2008 but was unable to play until July that year when he turned 18. Named in the first team squad for the 2008-09 season, Rafael scored in only his fourth Premier League appearance for the Red Devils, netting a 90th minute consolation in a 2-1 loss at Arsenal.

2. Danny Welbeck vs Stoke City on 15/11/2008 at the age of 17 years, 11 months, 20 days

Less than a month before turning 18, Danny Welbeck made his Manchester United Premier League debut as a 63rd minute substitute in a 5-0 romp over Stoke City. The young Englishman scored a 30-yard screamer to mark his debut. He failed to score in his two other league appearances that season but has since gone on to become a regular in the United line-up.

1. Federico Macheda vs Aston Villa on 05/04/2009 at the age of 17 years, 7 months, 14 days

Trailing 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in April and Liverpool fans confident of winning the Premier League, Sir Alex Ferguson introduced 17-year old Italian Federico Macheda on the hour. Cristiano Ronaldo had equalised for the home side in the 80th minute before Macheda made an instant impact with a 20-yard strike in the final minute to win United the game. The following week he scored the winner in the final 15 minutes at the Stadium of Light. Manchester United went on to win the Premier League title that year and fans put it down to the Italian’s two goals.
