Lionel Messi is two goals away from breaking Telmo Zarra’s record to become the all-time Spanish Liga top scorer.
The former Athletic Bilbao goal machine has held the record for more than half a century and scored his final league goal on 26 September 1954.
Like Zarra, Lionel Messi has scored all of his top flight goals for one club. The Barcelona forward has won several more honours.
Messi failed to score in last weekend’s Super Clasico defeat to Real Madrid which included the Argentine missing a sitter inside the six-yard box when his side led 1-0.
One week later and Barcelona are at home to sixth-place Celta Vigo where the fans are expectant on their 27-year old to at least tie Zarra’s record with one goal.
Incredibly, Lionel Messi has scored his first 250 La Liga goals in only 286 games. The record is coming and it could as early as today.
