Harry Kane’s hat-trick in Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-2 thrashing of Southampton at Wembley Stadium on Boxing Day saw the England international set a Premier League record.
The 24-year-old has now scored 39 goals in 36 Premier League games in 2017 – three more than Alan Shearer who he surpasses at the top of the pile. Shearer netted 36 goals in 1995 for Blackburn Rovers but did so in 42 games back when the top flight had 22 teams and therefore an extra four games per season.
Kane also became the first player to score six Premier League hat-tricks in a single year in the process. The Spurs striker is now only behind Alan Shearer (11) and Robbie Fowler (9) on the all-time list with eight trebles himself.
Uruguayan Luis Suárez was the previous player to score as many as 30 goals in a single calendar year when he did so for Liverpool back in 2013.
