A Granit Xhaka mistake left Arsenal fans fuming – as the Swiss internationals’ loose pass bounced into the back of the net off the hip of Chris Wood.
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang struck after five minutes, giving the Gunners a dream start, but their joy was cut short as half-time drew near.
Whilst seemingly in comfortable possession in their own box, Xhaka dithered on the ball and his pass in his own box was cut out by Wood, who was none the wiser as the ball cannoned off him and into an empty net.
Xhaka’s mistake adds to a terrible record he has whilst facing Burnley.
He has received two red cards in previous meetings, including getting his marching orders in December’s Burnley victory at the Emirates.
In-fact, since the start of the 17/18 season, no outfield player has made more mistakes leading to goals than Xhaka – who has cost his side eight goals.
However, perhaps Xhaka shouldn’t shoulder all of the blame in this case.
Bernd Leno gave him a ball inside the box that he couldn’t do too much with, when looking back, the German could’ve sent the ball long himself and cleared all danger.
Xhaka’s relationship with Gunners fans has been fractious at times and has the feel of being a real scapegoat at the club.
Today’s incident certainly hasn’t done anything to change the mind of those Arsenal fans, some of whom have actually started to warm to Xhaka in recent weeks.
Here’s what they had to say on twitter….
To all you Xhaka protectors. Where are you now. He’s terrible. It’s the same week in week out and still some fans say he’s alright and does the job. What job does he do? Nothing absolutely shocking worst Arsenal player I’ve ever seen.

To all the Xhaka apologists trying to blame Leno for the own goal, look at the space he had to play the ball to Luiz. Instead, he took a stupid touch and used his useless right foot to deflect an own goal in 👍 pic.twitter.com/sWvWbbq5Ad

Players like xhaka and chambers still at our club
Ambition means we have to bin these useless players first
We have to sell mediocre players

The issue isn't playing out of the back, we do that all the time! Why come for and ask for the ball when you're not sure and composed. Rubbish football from Xhaka. Leno will know better and clear it next time.
