Tottenham Hotspur aren’t short of centre-backs with Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga at their disposal, but Nuno Espirito Santo recently lost Toby Alderweireld to Al-Duhail SC so he’s in the market for a placement.
Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic says Spurs are interested in Nikola Milenkovic and might have success in landing his signature as his contract is up in 12 months and his asking price wouldn’t break the bank. The 23-year-old is keen to play in the Premier League too, so Spurs should be confident.
Milenkovic joined Fiorentina from Partizan in 2017 and has gone on to make 133 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals with one assist. He’s been a regular at the Stadio Artemio Franchi but has an uncertain future as his existing deal is up in 2022.
The Viola are resigned to losing Milenkovic and are willing to cash in early rather than losing him for nothing, so a bid of €15m (£12.8m) from Spurs might be enough. The Serbian international takes home around €29k-per-week (£24.7k-per-week), so he won’t break the wage structure either.
Davinson Sanchez made more tackles (40) than any other Tottenham centre-back last season, but Milenkovic boasted 49 tackles in 2021/22. He made 44 interceptions, 121 clearances, blocked 43 shots/crosses/passes and won 101 aerial duels. And with an 86% pass completion, Milenkovic is adept at retaining possession. He ticks all the boxes, so Spurs might push on to complete a deal.
Milenkovic is a talented defender who is good at turning over possession and dominates aerially, so Tottenham could do a lot worse for less than £13m.
And his humble salary demands make him a potential bargain buy, so the Lilywhites shouldn’t hang about – he looks an improvement on Dier, Tanganga and Rodon.
If Tottenham don’t make a move quickly, another suitor is sure to pay attention.
