Anthony Martial has struggled for form, fitness and playing time at Manchester United in the last 18 months and Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News says his future at Old Trafford is now uncertain.
Martial hit double figures for Premier League goals in two consecutive seasons (10 goals in 2018/19, 17 goals in 2019/20) but has since fallen off dramatically. He scored only four goals in 22 games last season and hasn’t found the back of the net in the top-flight since February.
Not only has his form jumped off a cliff, the 25-year-old no longer commands a starting place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani have been preferred up front over Martial this season.
Martial was given 15 minutes from the bench in United’s 5-1 win over Leeds United (August 14), played 60 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Southampton (August 22), had 18 minutes from the bench in the 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers (August 29), had six minutes from the bench in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United (September 11) and was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over West Ham United (September 19).
United are reportedly willing to sell Martial for £40m amid interest from Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, but it remains to be seen if either club actually put forward an acceptable offer. The Frenchman wants out but has three years remaining on his deal, so the Red Devils aren’t pressured to lower his asking price to move him on.
Martial has declined in the last 18 months and doesn’t appear happy in Manchester, so his future is up in the air. He’s been firing blanks for most of 2021, so he’s not putting himself in the shop window either.
