Manchester United aren’t short of attacking players team with Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Amad Diallo, Anthony Martial, Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo at their disposal, but ESPN say the Red Devils are on the hunt for another.

United have been monitoring the progress of Erling Haaland at Borussia Dortmund and aren’t giving up on trying to sign him. The 21-year-old has interest from nearly every big club in Europe, but the red side of Manchester believe they can beat out the competition.

Haaland joined Dortmund in January 2020 and has gone on to make 64 appearances in all competitions, scoring 63 goals with 18 assists. He’s one of the best strikers in the continent and only turned 21 in July, so it’s easy to see why United are so keen.

Dortmund have slapped a €75m (£64.4m) release clause on Haaland’s head that will be activated next summer, so there’s sure to be a battle for the centre-forward when the 2021/22 campaign comes to a close.

The Norwegian international has three years remaining on his deal at the Signal Iduna Park, but it’s hard to see him seeing out his contract. Unless Dortmund can tie Haaland down to an extension while removing his release clause, he’ll be plying his trade elsewhere.

Martial scored only four goals in 22 Premier League games last season, so United could do with an upgrade. And although Edinson Cavani bagged 16 goals in 39 games, he’s 34 and will eventually need replacing. Could that be Haaland?

Between Cavani and Ronaldo, United should enough in attack until Haaland becomes available – they’re currently third in the Premier League with seven points from a possible nine.

The 21-year-old would be an absolute snip at €75m, but there will be stiff competition for his signature – Manchester City are one side desperate to lure him away from Dortmund.
