Tottenham Hotspur have Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty at right-back while having Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso in midfield, but reports say the Lilywhites could sign a player that can operate in both roles when the January transfer window opens.
In August, Centotrentuno (h/t Sport Witness) said Tottenham were interested in Nahitan Nández and had the midfielder top of their wishlist before missing out on him over the summer. Comments made by agent Pablo Bentancur to Calcio Napoli 24 Live (h/t Sport Witness) open the door to Spurs returning for him, however.
He said of Nández: “Cagliari? Giulini has promised the player and me to do everything possible so that he leaves in the January market. Nandez wants to win something; he wants to play in the Champions League.
“The president has given us his word; Nandez has been the most expensive player in Cagliari’s history, but we know the crisis there has been.
“Goodbye on loan or outright? I think he will sell him at a lower price than the one requested, there is a 36 million clause, but the president spoke yesterday with Nandez and told him that he will lower the price and let him leave.”
Nández joined Cagliari on a five-year deal from Boca Juniors in 2019 and has gone on to make 79 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals with seven assists. He’s been a regular at the Sardegna Arena and has impressed enough to garner interest from other clubs, so he could soon be on the move.
The Uruguayan international is believed to have held talks with president Tommaso Giulini over his future and has the green light to leave for the right price, but will Tottenham make a move? The North London outfit were heavily linked with Nández months ago, but it remains to be seen if they’ll return in January.
Spurs aren’t lacking depth in the two roles Nández plays in, so he might not be worth acquiring now. The 25-year-old has made seven Serie A appearances this season, amassing 576 minutes from a possible 630, but reports suggest he could be on the move in January.
Tottenham don’t appear to need Nández in the squad, so they could turn their attentions elsewhere now. The latest report on the Uruguayan suggests he will be moved on by Cagliari in the next transfer window, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be coming to North London. This story update is still fresh.
