Chelsea aren’t short of centre-backs with Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Trevoh Chalobah, Andreas Christensen and Malang Sarr at their disposal, but Sport say they’re looking at Ronald Araujo. The 22-year-old has been a regular at Barcelona and is held in high regard, but his future at the Camp Nou is uncertain because of his contract situation.

Araujo’s existing deal is up in 18 months and Barcelona want to offer an improved contract to reflect his status as a first-team player, but the Catalans are in financial difficulty and won’t be able to offer as much as other clubs in Europe. Barca signed Araujo for €1.7m (£1.45m) in 2020 and agreed a contract worth £50k-per-week/£2.5m-a-year, but his value has risen significantly.

Chelsea see the Uruguayan international as a fantastic addition to the defence and can blow Barcelona out of the water financially, so Sport say Araujo might be lured away from the Nou Camp as a result. Thomas Tuchel might have to get rid of one or two existing players to make room for the 22-year-old, however, as there’s already stiff competition for places.

Araujo has made 53 appearances in all competitions for Barca, scoring three goals with one assist. He’s been a bargain and a revelation during the club’s financial crisis, but money may still be standing in their way of keeping him beyond 2023. Chelsea can offer ‘higher amounts’ than the centre-back would hope to make at the Camp Nou, but the Blues would still have to agree a price with Barca.

Summary

Araujo being a regular for Barcelona suggests he’d have something to bring to Stamford Bridge if signed, but there’s no suggestion that Chelsea are going to lodge an official bid just yet.

There’s also no suggestion that Araujo desperately wants out of the club either, so this story should be taken with a pinch of salt. The 22-year-old hasn’t rejected any terms, so he’s still a happy and willing Barcelona player.

The report is speculation.
