Report: Liverpool may have to pay £42m and £7.8m-a-year wages to sign 33-goal Chelsea man

Jurgen Klopp is content with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota in attack, but El Nacional hint that the Liverpool manager might want an upgrade on Takumi Minamino and the injured Harvey Elliot, two players that haven’t had a lot of minutes this season.

One name on the Reds’ shortlist is Christian Pulisic. The 23-year-old has an uncertain future at Chelsea after falling down the pecking order due to inconsistent form last season and injury this campaign, but El Nacional say Chelsea don’t plan to strengthen a Premier League rival.

Pulisic joined the Blues in January 2019 and has gone on to make 83 appearances in all competitions, scoring 19 goals with 14 assists. The US international, who boasts 17 goals and 10 assists in 42 games for his country, had a good debut season at Chelsea but struggled in his second campaign.

Pulisic had a hand in 15 goals from 25 Premier League games in 2019/20 but only six goals from 27 league games in 2020/21. The former Borussia Dortmund forward has made just 6/20 appearances this season as he’s been sidelined with an ankle injury, but he’s still managed two goals.

Chelsea started Pulisic in Tuesday’s Champions League win over Juventus, so Thomas Tuchel may still have big plans for him. The 23-year-old has three years remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge too, so the Blues need not force out a useful player in the squad.

El Nacional say Pulisic has an asking price of €50m (£42m) and wage demands in excess of £150k-per-week/£7.8m-a-year, but it would be strange for Chelsea to sell him to Liverpool. A mid-season sale wouldn’t benefit the Blues as they’d have only a month to replace him and it’s been established they won’t do business with a domestic rivals, so this story is unlikely to go anywhere.

Liverpool may have to turn their attentions elsewhere, if they genuinely believed Pulisic was an attainable target.
