Manchester United aren’t short of strikers with Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani at their disposal while Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford can operate in the makeshift role, but TyC Sports (h/t Sport Witness) say the Red Devils are looking to strengthen their attack.
United are showing an interest in Julian Alvarez and have made contact with his representative over a deal. TyC Sports say agent Fernando Hidalgo ‘received a call’ from the Premier League giants, but it remains to be seen if they’ll have a face-to-face meeting.
The 21-year-old joined River Plate from Club Atletico Atalaya in 2015 and has gone on to make 96 appearances in all competitions, scoring 36 goals with 25 assists. Alvarez has scored an impressive 18 goals with seven assists in 21 Liga Profesional games this season, so it’s easy to see why United want him.
River may be forced to sell as the Argentine international’s contract is up at the end of 2022 and his release clause is €20m (£16.8m), so there should be offers coming his way when the winter transfer window opens. United will surely be one of many sides making enquiries, so it remains to be seen where he’ll end up.
Although United have strikers in abundance, they might lose one or two players in the coming transfer windows. Alvarez may be lined up as a replacement.
Martial has scored only one goal in 10 games this season, isn’t commanding a starting place and has been granted a departure by Ralf Rangnick. Cavani has been linked with a January exit from Old Trafford, so United might have a void to fill.
When the January transfer window opens, it will be interesting to see if United pursue Alvarez and can get a deal over the line. He’s young, prolific and affordable, so there’s little reason why they’d look elsewhere.
