Christian Pulisic isn’t having the most enjoyable season at Chelsea and may be considering his future as a result – the 23-year-old isn’t commanding a regular starting place under Thomas Tuchel and admitted in December that he was being used as a square peg in a round hole.
Barcelona have been linked with a move for Pulisic in December and January, and the US international is reportedly open to making the switch if he feels his Chelsea career is stagnating, so could something give?
The 23-year-old had a hand in 21 goals in his debut campaign but has only managed a total of 16 goals and assists in the last two seasons while now finding himself behind Callum Hudson-Odoi in the pecking order.
It’s highly unlikely Chelsea would do business in the winter transfer window, as there are only hours remaining to get a deal done. Barcelona, who are the only side to be seriously linked with Pulisic, won’t bring in another forward unless they offload Ousmane Dembele.
Chelsea wouldn’t lose a forward without giving themselves enough time to replace them either, so it makes little sense for a rash decision to be made on Pulisic’s future. He’s not in the manager’s reckoning for now but is still a useful player to have in the squad.
That being said, Pulisic leaving this summer isn’t farfetched given he’s been public about his unhappiness while rumours suggest he’s considering an exit, so his situation may have to be resolved at the end of the season.
If the 23-year-old remains on the periphery for the remaining months of 2021/22, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him sold. If Pulisic can get back into the team, however, he may well see his contract out at Stamford Bridge.
