Report: Man Utd must pay £16.6m and £210k p/w wages for Barcelona rebel

Manchester United aren’t short of forwards with Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga at their disposal, but Sport (h/t Sport Witness) say they’re interested in another – Ousmane Dembele. The 24-year-old has an uncertain future at Barcelona as his deal is up this summer and he’s putting pen to paper on a contract extension.

Barcelona don’t want to lose the French international on a free transfer so they’re willing to cash in this month. The Catalan giants paid €135m (£112m) for Dembele in 2017, but Le Parisien (h/t Get Football News France) say he’ll be available for just €20m (£16.6m). If United match his valuation, The Sun say they’ll have to pay wages of £210k-per-week to agree personal terms.

Dembele has made 129 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, scoring 31 goals with 23 assists. He’s made only 11/31 appearances across the board this season due to injury and has since been frozen out of the first-team after rejecting a new deal.

United could land his signature for little more than they paid for Daniel James, but Sport say there’s been no formal offer made just yet.  Interim manager Ralf Rangnick is a big fan of Dembele, but time is running out for them to sign him – the January transfer window shuts on Monday evening.

United are currently fourth in the Premier League table, 19 points adrift of leaders Manchester City. The Red Devils are sixth in the league for shots taken (13.8 per game) and fifth for goals scored (36), so they need a player than can put away more of the chances being created.

Dembele has scored 53 goals and made 50 assists in 208 career games (Stade Rennais/Borussia Dortmund/Barcelona), so he’s contributing a goal every 127 minutes on average. For only £16.6m, United could do a lot worse. If Rangnick stalls on a deal, he risks losing out to another club.
