Kepa Arrizabalaga has an uncertain future at Chelsea after falling down the pecking order and Alex Wood of the Daily Star says the Blues will green light a departure if his asking price is met. Newcastle United have been credited with an interest, but it remains to be seen if they’d break their transfer record on an out-of-form goalkeeper.

Kepa joined Chelsea from Athletic in 2018 and was first-choice between the sticks, but he struggled for consistency and couldn’t cut out the mistakes from his game, so Edouard Mendy ended up replacing him in the summer of 2020. Mendy remains a regular under Thomas Tuchel while Kepa either sits on the bench or is handed sporadic opportunities, so an exit looks on the cards.

The 27-year-old has made 122 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, conceding 128 goals and keeping 46 clean sheets. Kepa was guilty of making costly errors in goal upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge which was why he lost his place in the side, but he’s been unable to wrestle it back from Mendy and finds himself largely surplus to requirements.

The Spanish international has made 13/41 appearances across the board this season, featuring in just four Premier League games from a possible 24. In fact, Kepa has played in only eight league outings since October 2020, so the writing has been on the wall ever since Mendy arrived.

Despite his situation in West London, the 27-year-old won’t come cheap. The Daily Star say Chelsea are requesting £50m which is likely to scare off a lot of sides. Newcastle have lucrative resources following their takeover by Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, so it’s no surprise they’ve been linked.

Whether the Magpies actually make a move is another story, however, so Kepa’s future will continue to hang in the balance.
