Report: Liverpool ‘have sights set’ on £55m-rated 22 y/o with 37 goals in 73 games

Liverpool are first in the Premier League for shots per game (19.5), first in the league for goals (70) and have three forwards leading the league scoring charts (Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane), so the Reds aren’t short of attacking options. They have Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi who can lead the line too, but Football Insider say Liverpool want a new centre-forward this summer.

The Merseysiders reportedly ‘have their sights set’ on Darwin Nunez and could make a move for the 22-year-old at the end of the season. Nunez has been in fine form at Benfica, attracting interest from Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern munich, but Football Insider say Liverpool may be more committed to landing his signature if contract negotiations with Salah, Mane and Firmino aren’t successful.

Nunez joined Benfica on a five-year deal from UD Almeria in 2020 and has gone on to make 73 appearances in all competitions, scoring 37 goals with 14 assists. The Uruguayan international, who has two goals in eight appearances for his country, boasts 18 goals from 19 Liga Portugal games this season, so it’s no wonder Liverpool are paying attention.

Firmino has 22 league goals since the start of the 2019/20 campaign, so he pales in comparison to Nunez. The Brazilian international turned 31 later this year too, so he’s in the twilight years of his career. And the fact Nunez has scored in Champions League encounters with Barcelona and Bayern this season shows he’s got real pedigree in the top competitions.

Benfica paid £21.6m for the 22-year-old and would be willing to let him go for £55m this summer, so Liverpool shouldn’t hang about this summer. Nunez is enjoying the best season of his career and still has the potential to get better, so this one is a no-brainer if Jurgen Klopp wants an upgrade on Firmino and Origi.
