Report: Liverpool ‘main bidders’ for ‘quality’ Real Madrid forward worth £41.8m-£50m

Liverpool signed Luis Diaz from FC Porto in January to compliment an attack that features Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota among others, so the Reds don’t need another addition to the frontline. Despite this, Sport say Liverpool are ‘main bidders’ for Marco Asensio and could look to sign him this summer.

The 26-year-old has an uncertain future at Real Madrid after falling down the pecking order, so he’ll likely be made available for sale at the end of the season. Sport call Asensio a ‘quality’ player who is still playing regularly for Real, but he might find his place in the side gone after Los Blancos go on a spending spree.

Real want to take Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain, so they’d have an abundance of attackers next season, not including Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior. Asensio has only started 14/26 league games this season and has been substituted 11 times, so the Spaniard might want more minutes than what he’s getting.

Whether he would actually get in the Liverpool team over Salah, Mane, Jota and Diaz remains to be seen. However. The Reds would have to pay a large sum of money to procure his signature too. His asking price is around €50m-€60m (£41.8m-£50m), so is Asensio really worth the outlay?

The 26-year-old has scored nine goals and made one assist in 29 games across the board this season, but that pales in comparison to Salah (27 goals, 10 assists), Jota (17 goals, 3 assists) and Mane (13 goals, 1 assist). Even Firmino has eight goals and four assists, so there are four Liverpool players contributing more than forward they reportedly want to sign.

Summary

It’s highly unlikely Liverpool will make a move for Asensio. The Merseysiders aren’t short of attacking options and would have to pay over the odds for a player that doesn’t improve their squad, so Asensio won’t be coming to Anfield.
