3 apps in 2021/22, asked to leave in January – 25 y/o has uncertain Man Utd future [Opinion]

Dean Henderson could be on his way out of Manchester United this summer after failing to dethrone David De Gea between the sticks.

The 25-year-old impressed during a two-year loan spell at Sheffield United (2018 – 2020) and featured in 26 games for the Red Devils upon his return in 2020/21, keeping an impressive 13 clean sheets, but he’s found himself on the periphery this campaign and wants to leave for more opportunities elsewhere.

Henderson has made three appearances across the board this season, conceding three goals while failing to keep a clean sheet, spending more time an unused substitute than on the pitch, so the writing is on the wall. His career is spiralling due to inactivity and United are planning for his potential exit.

Henderson has been loaned out to four different clubs, but his stint at Sheff Utd was the most life-changing. After an impressive debut season at Brammall Lane, he was called up to the England squad in October 2019 and got his maiden cap a year later.

The 25-year-old made the team for Euro 2020 in the summer of 2021 but had to withdraw after one game due to a hip injury. He hasn’t made the squad since and doesn’t look likely to unless he’s playing more football. This could be in his thoughts when he thinks about his situation at Old Trafford.

In January, Henderson wanted out and Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur were interested in procuring his signature. He was refused a move by United, however, as Ralf Rangnick needed him as cover. But as Henderson doesn’t want to spend another season on the bench, he understands that he’ll have to leave.

The fact United are lining up a bid for Benjamin Siegrist to play second fiddle for De Gea speaks volumes. They must know Henderson is willing to leave to get first-team football, so his 11-year stint in Manchester looks to be coming to an end.
