Lucas Torreira is expected to leave Arsenal this summer as he’s been surplus to requirements in North London for two years, resulting in him being loaned out to Atletico Madrid (October 2020 – June 2021) and Fiorentina (August 2021 – present).
The 26-year-old has impressed in his recent stint at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and could turn the move permanent in the coming months.
La Nazione (h/t FiorentinaUno) say Arsenal are ‘waiting to transfer’ Torreira as soon as a Fiorentina representative ‘flies to London’ with €15m (£12.5m).
The Gunners want a deal done ‘without complications’ as the 26-year-old has no future back at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta has Mohamed Elneny, Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Sambi Lokonga at his disposal, so he can afford to offload the out-of-favour defensive midfielder this summer.
Torreira has turned his career around in Italy and is a player Fiorentina are desperate to sign, so a deal should go through easily. Arsenal paid around £26m for the player back in 2018, so they’ll be losing half the money spent, not including his £75k-per-week/ £3.9m-a-year wages.
Torreira has made a total of 89 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, scoring four goals with six assists, last featuring for the Gunners in July 2020. Partey and Xhaka have formed a formidable partnership in midfield under Arteta, so there’s no room for the Uruguayan international.
Fiorentina are 8th in Serie A with 47 points from 29 games, four points adrift of the top-six. The Violas haven’t finished in the top-half of the table for three consecutive seasons, so this campaign under Vincenzo Italiano is shaping up to be their best since 2018.
Torreira is certainly to thank for their rise. He’s featured in 25 of Fiorentina’s 29 Serie A games this season, scoring four goals with one assist. The 26-year-old has created 18 chances, won 18 aerial duels, blocked 16 shots/passes/crosses, made 13 clearances, completed 87% of his 1147 passes and averaged a tackle (32) or interception (25) every 32 minutes.
