Report: Tottenham could sell ‘overlooked’ 24 y/o despite ‘impressive attitude’

Joe Rodon could be on his way out of Tottenham Hotspur this summer after struggling for playing time under Antonio Conte. The 24-year-old hasn’t managed to nail down a starting place since his arrival in 2020, so the writing has been on the wall for some time.

Dan Kilpatrick of the London Evening Standard says Tottenham are expected to listen to offers for the ‘overlooked’ centre-back despite his ‘impressive attitude’. Rodon isn’t a player who rocks the boat, but he doesn’t have the trust of his manager so a departure is the only way he’ll get opportunities.

The Welsh international joined Tottenham from Swansea City two years ago and has gone on to make 22 appearances in all competitions. Rodon found himself behind Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez in the pecking order last season, and he’s behind Cristiano Romero and Dier in the pecking order this time, so his move to North London hasn’t gone to plan.

Rodon made 19 appearances across the board in his debut season but spent large swathes of the campaign out of the matchday squad or as an unused substitute. He’s made only eight appearances in all competitions this time, spending most of the season on the bench, so it may be time to seek an exit.

The 24-year-old has three years remaining on his deal at Tottenham, so the Lilywhites aren’t obligated to cash in quickly for cheap. They paid £11m for Rodon and may not allow him a departure unless they make the majority of that money back.

Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion were interested in the defender back in December 2021, but it remains to be seen if either club will return for him this summer. Rodon hasn’t featured in the Premier League since September 2021 and hasn’t had a lot of match practice in the last two years, so there might be better options available for suitors.
