Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has explained Jadon Sancho’s absence from today’s match against Atletico Madrid.

The England international was named in Ten Hag’s 21-man squad which made the trip to Oslo for the pre-season friendly against their La Liga opponents in the Norwegian capital, but was nowhere to be seen today.

Ten Hag has revealed that Sancho became unwell during the course of the night and is not available for selection.

United will be hoping that the former Borussia Dortmund winger will recover in time to be able to play some part against another Spanish side, Rayo Vallecano who are the visitors to Old Trafford tomorrow afternoon.

Ten Hag told the official Manchester United site: “Overnight he got sick, so he is not available,”

United line-up against Atletico Madrid: De Gea; Dalot, Maguire (c), Lindelof, Malacia; McTominay, Fred; Elanga, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.

It’s a huge shame that Sancho has become unwell this close to the new Premier League campaign with Ten Hag likely to already have in his mind his starting eleven to face Brighton after casting his eye over the performances of his players this weekend.

Sancho will be certainly looking to kick on and show a marked improvement after what was a disappointing first season back in England by his own standards.
