Cristiano Ronaldo has not been named in the Manchester United squad for the pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid which will take place in Oslo, tomorrow.

United boss Erik ten Hag has named a 21-man squad which has made the trip to the Norwegian capital ahead of the fixture against their La Liga opponents.

Ronaldo has remained back in England with the 37-year-old having been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer with some Atletico Madrid supporters having protested at the prospect of the Portuguese joining them (The Sun).

United are also in action on Sunday when they face Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford in which will be Ten Hag’s first matchin charge in front of his new supporters ahead of the visit of Brighton for the Premier League opener next weekend.

The Sports View

It was hardly a surprise that Ronaldo was not part of the squad which made the trip to Norway given his lack of involvement with Ten Hag’s squad during pre-season.

The United manager needs to remain firm and prove that he is the man in charge of what happens in terms of Ronaldo’s future, whether that’s in the best interests to keep him at Old Trafford or grant him his wish of a departure.
