Barcelona boss Xavi has candidly admitted that he does not know whether Frenkie de Jong will still be at the club come the end of the summer transfer window, amid interest from Manchester United.
The Dutch international is a prority target for United boss Erik ten Hag as he looks to bolster his midfield options as part of his rebuild of the Old Trafford outfit.
Ten Hag is all too familiar with the qualities of the 25-year-old, having flourished under the management of the new United boss during their time together at Ajax where they reached the semi final of the Champions League in the 2018/2019 campaign.
Xavi was asked about the future of his player following Barcelona’s 2-0 win against New York Red Bulls yesterday and admitted that a lot can happen between now and the transfer deadline.
De Jong is said to be relucant to leave the Camp Nou, but the Catalan giants financial situation could force their hands into an exit (Metro).
Xavi was quoted by the Manchester Evening News: “I don’t know if he’s [De Jong] going to stay here. There’s still time and a lot of things can still happen.
“At the moment he’s part of the team, like everyone else. The fact that he played as a central defender in the other games was not a sign that he was leaving.
“I don’t need to send signals on the pitch. I can speak directly with my footballers.”

De Jong is obviously emotionally attached to Barcelona, however the financial problems they have encountered can play into United’s hands. Fans will be hoping that there is a resolution to this long-standing transfer saga in the next week, rather than dragging it onto the last few days of the window when Ten Hag desperartely needs more reinforcements for the start of the new season.
