Gary Neville has taken to Twitter to claim that he recently heard that Frenkie de Jong had other preferences ahead of a potential move to Manchester United.

The former right-back disclosed that when he was recently in Miami as part of pre-season when Barcelona were playing in Florida he heard third-hand that the Dutch midfielder would either prefer to remain with the Catalan giants or would prefer a switch to London with Chelsea.

United are already said to have agreed on a fee of around £65million with the Catalan giants for the 25-year-old, however, the player is reported to be unconvinced about making the move to Old Trafford (Evening Standard).

Neville admitted that what he heard while in the USA was not from a concrete source, but it does follow the same trend as a report from Sky Sports which suggested that Chelsea were looking to move for the midfielder under the noses of his old side.

De Jong would be a brilliant acquisition for United, however, if the player has no desire to make the move and is either holding out for a resolution to his financial situation at Barcelona or harbours ambitions of a move to London, then they must accept it is time to move on.

The capital is always an attractive proposition to players with Chelsea also able to match United’s might when it comes to paying wages.
