Manchester United are still intent on proceeding with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the current transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.

United already have an agreement in place with Barca regarding de Jong’s sale ahead of the next season, both clubs have found common ground with the deal being worth £63million in guaranteed amount alongside an additional £8.47million in bonuses (The Athletic).

Despite the agreement in principle, the Red Devils have failed to finalise the proposed move so far. They have decided to continue their pursuit to sign the Dutch international as the alternative targets are considered not to be at the same level former Ajax player.

United boss Erik ten Hag is said to regard de Jong as the cornerstone of the project he is trying to build at Old Trafford, however, that coupled with the lack of quality alternatives, has prompted the Manchester outfit to maintain their approach to get their hands on the midfielder.

The midfield has been the main issue within the team for quite a long time, with the problems being traced to long before last summer. The deep-lying areas, in particular, were their major weakness due to the lack of quality technical options that could solve the instability within the lineup.

The situation has been made even worse after Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic left on free transfers in this transfer window (GOAL). Hence, it is understandable why the club is eager to finalise a move for their top midfield target in de Jong.

However, 13 weeks have passed since the Mancunians started their attempt to prise away de Jong. The 25-year-old is yet to make his switch to Manchester, with the season nearing its start with each passing day. Claims have been made that the hold-up is down to the de Jong’s deferred wages or his hesitance to join the English club even with ten Hag’s presence.

Now, Chelsea are also stated to be interested in signing the La Liga ace, with a formal bid possibly being lined up soon (Sport). Even if the alternative options are not as good as de Jong, perhaps ten Hag’s team may have to take a stern decision shortly so as not to risk their transfer plans to bolster the declined midfield.
