Aston Villa weighing up move for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet

Aston Villa are interested in signing Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet before the summer transfer window ends on Friday night, reports Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The France international spent last season on loan in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, making 26 appearances, but he is no longer in the plans of Barca manager Xavi.

Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings suffered a knee injury against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on the first day of the season and will be out for many months after undergoing surgery, and manager Unai Emery is desperate to bolster his options at the back.

Lenglet impressed at Spurs last term, weighing in with a goal and two assists across all competitions, but the dismissal of Antonio Conte ended his chances of making the move permanent, with new Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou not keen on him.

Villa are as Emery was impressed with his performances last term and also knows him from his time in the La Liga, so a deal could work out if the player is interested in joining the Midlands club.

The Villans started 2023-24 with a 5-1 loss to Newcastle but have since bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Everton and a 3-1 win over Burnley, and they have all but booked a place in the group stages of the Europa Conference League after winning 5-0 against Scottish Premiership side Hibernian away from home in the first leg of the play-off rounds.

They host Hibs in the second leg tomorrow before travelling to Anfield to face Liverpool in their last Premier League game before the international break, and having Lenglet available for the trip will be great.

Villa have added Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres, Nicolo Zaniolo and Youri Tielemans to their squad so far this summer but are not done yet from the look of things, and getting a deal for the Barcelona defender over the line before the window closes will be a huge boost.
