Conor Gallagher expected to fight for Chelsea spot despite Tottenham interest

Gallagher expected to fight for Chelsea spot despite Tottenham interest

There has been increasing speculation surrounding the long-term future of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher throughout the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old is subject to substantial interest from several Premier League clubs, but Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be at the front of the queue.

Football journalist Ben Jacobs reckons Chelsea will listen to offers for the England international who came up through the youth ranks at Cobham before establishing himself in the first team.

While the Blues are not actively looking to offload Gallagher, they will not deter prospective suitors from inquiring about his availability, but only bids north of £50 million would be entertained.

Spurs have been credited with a genuine interest in the Englishman, but they have not kicked off negotiations or submitted any formal bids to lure him to North London.

However, Gallagher is strongly expected to remain at Stamford Bridge beyond this summer, with the former Crystal Palace loanee determined to fight for his place in the squad.

Like every other Chelsea player, Gallagher endured a massively underwhelming campaign last term but has shown significant signs of improvement under Mauricio Pochettino’s tutelage.

Despite Chelsea’s flurry of new players in the middle of the park, Gallagher has started every game for the Blues this season, leaving an impression on Pochettino and the supporters each time.

He captained his boyhood club in last night’s 2-1 Carabao Cup second-round victory over League Two side AFC Wimbledon and subsequently reiterated his desire to remain at Stamford Bridge this season.

Gallagher has put in a commanding shift when required and is well on his way to establishing himself as a key player in the Pochettino era.

Tottenham have also been credited with a genuine interest in Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson, who is valued at £50m.

They are highly unlikely to fork out £100m to lure both Gallagher and Johnson to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before tomorrow’s deadline, yet the possibility cannot be entirely ruled out.
