Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is targeting a return to action in next weekend’s Premier League fixture against West Ham United, The Athletic reports.
The Reds are gearing up for their Europa League Group E curtain raiser against Austrian giants LASK on Thursday night, but that is expected to come too soon for Alexander-Arnold.
The 24-year-old picked up a hamstring problem in the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa earlier this month, which subsequently ruled him out of international duty with England.
Alexander-Arnold also missed the 3-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers following the resumption of club football, but he is reportedly progressing well with his recovery.
While he is also expected to sit out the LASK clash, the Liverpool academy graduate continues to build up his fitness at the club’s training ground.
He could rejoin Jurgen Klopp’s first-team training ahead of making his return to action this weekend with Liverpool poised to welcome West Ham to Anfield.
Alexander-Arnold has been in superb form for Liverpool this season, even though his one assist in four games belittles that assertion.
There are still areas of his defensive game that need improvement, considering he has already committed two errors leading to goal this season.
However, the Liverpool vice-captain remains pivotal to Klopp’s style of play, and his new inverted role has taken his game to new heights.
Alexander-Arnold is averaging 2.3 key passes per 90 this season and has become a commanding presence in the middle of the park, winning 60% of his ground duels even though he is dribbled past at least once per match.
He has delivered one key pass and boasts a 71% dribble success rate, although losing the ball 17.8 times suggests he could do with more security in possession.
Nevertheless, Alexander-Arnold, who is in line for a new contract, has played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s eye-catching start to the season.
The Reds are unbeaten in the Premier League after five games and will hope to translate their form into the continental scene on Thursday night.
