Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo delivered a fantastic performance against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night.
The Merseyside giants made the worst possible start against the Foxes. Kasey McAteer scored after just three minutes on the clock at Anfield following an error from Kostas Tsimikas.
The Foxes preserved the lead until the half-time interval, but Liverpool equalised right after the break. Gakpo scored with his trademark turn and finish from a Ryan Gravenberch assist.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s outrageous shot from the edge of the box gave Liverpool the lead in the 70th minute before Diogo Jota put the game to bed with a fine backheel goal before stoppage time.
In our opinion, Gakpo was the man of the match with a fine all-round performance. He started as the main striker, but moved into midfield after Gravenberch’s substitution after the hour mark.
Aside from his goal, the Dutch international won nine duels and four tackles. The 24-year-old looked back at his best and will be hoping to break into the starting line-up over the weekend.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently on a five-match winning streak in the Premier League, but they face a tough test on Saturday evening where they face Tottenham Hotspur away from home.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are one of four unbeaten teams in the division. They were very impressive against Arsenal last weekend and were by far the stronger outfit in the second half of the 2-2 draw.
With home advantage, Spurs will back themselves to spring up a surprise. The onus is on Liverpool to make a better start and avoid conceding an early goal which has become a habit this campaign.
Gakpo should be knocking on the door for a start after yesterday’s showing. We believe the €55 million-rated star should get the nod over Luis Diaz on the left wing.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 12 Premier League games against Spurs, but have dropped points in two of the previous four meetings.
