Conor Gallagher’s long-term future at Chelsea remains the subject of intense speculation despite the midfielder’s enormously impressive start to the season.
The Englishman’s contract at Stamford Bridge runs out at the end of next season, and The Athletic reporter Liam Twomey suggests talks of an extension have yet to begin.
Until the back end of the summer transfer window, Gallagher was heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge with Tottenham Hotspur among a handful of clubs eager to snap him up from Chelsea.
However, the England international has immensely improved across all aspects of his game and has arguably been Chelsea’s best performer this season.
The 23-year-old has established himself as a prominent member of Mauricio Pochettino’s line-up, slowly building a formidable partnership with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in the middle of the park.
His performances have also earned him recognition at international level, with the midfielder now gradually becoming a regular fixture in Gareth Southgate’s England teams.
Gallagher has consistently performed at a high level thus far and was once again the best player in a Chelsea shirt during the hugely disappointing 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
He maintained an 86% pass accuracy, delivering an eye-catching four key passes while winning four of his seven attempted ground battles.
He also recorded one interception and two tackles and was involved in Mykhaylo Mudryk’s much-talked-about cross-shot goal that handed the Blues a two-goal lead.
While talks of a new deal are yet to kick off, Chelsea are expected to sit down with the Cobham academy graduate in the coming months to thrash out a contract extension.
Pochettino is understood to be a huge admirer of the hardworking midfielder, who has also expressed his desire to continue plying his trade at the West London club.
However, if a new deal is not in the works when the January transfer window rolls around, it will be unsurprising to see interested parties come knocking on Chelsea’s door.
