Rodri delivers outstanding display for Man City in derby win

Manchester City midfielder Rodri delivered an outstanding performance during the 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League derby on Sunday.

The Spaniard is one of the best defensive midfielders in world football at the moment and he showed his class in the Manchester derby with an exemplary display from the number six role.

Rodri won the crucial penalty to put City ahead in the first half and he thereafter dominated the proceedings against the likes of Sofyan Amrabat and Bruno Fernandes in the centre of the park.

Over 90 minutes, he had 99 touches with 78 accurate passes and won 10 duels – he was the first in each of those statistics. The 27-year-old also won the 2nd most number of tackles in the game.

Rodri has been a key player for the Cityzens at the heart of the midfield. It is not surprising that City’s three defeats in all competitions this season have come when the Spaniard was unavailable for selection.

Hence, the £220,000 per week is pivotal to manager Pep Guardiola’s plans and City need to keep him fit and away from suspensions in order to secure a fourth straight Premier League title this season.

City won’t be in midweek action after their early exit from the Carabao Cup. Their next game will come up against Bournemouth away from home on Saturday where they have the chance to go top of the table.

Arsenal, who are ahead of them in the second spot on goals scored, face Newcastle United in the late kick-off while leaders Tottenham Hotspur don’t play until next Monday against Chelsea in their home ground.

With both north London clubs having tricky fixtures to contend with, City and Guardiola must fancy their chances of reclaiming the top spot in the Premier League standings after the forthcoming gameweek.
