Ally McCoist has suggested that Newcastle United will win a cup in the near future.
Speaking on talkSPORT with Alan Brazil, the former Rangers hero has said that the Magpies are in a good place under Eddie Howe, and winning a trophy is “only a matter of time” for them.
The Magpies reached the finals of the Carabao Cup last season but they suffered defeat at the hands of Manchester United. This time, they have a good chance of winning the trophy after they have reached the quarter-final stages, where they will face Chelsea.
“They will win a cup within the next couple of seasons,” said McCoist on talkSPORT.
“The place is buzzing. Genuinely pleased for Newcastle fans. I think it’s only a matter of time, yes I do.”
Strong prediction
The Magpies have steadily improved since their takeover, and they are heading in the right direction under Howe.
They secured a place in the Champions League last season, and this time they are aiming to get into the knock-out stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
It won’t be easy though and their hopes of qualification were severely dented after they lost 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund in the midweek.
They are yet to face AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain in their next two games, and it will require a massive effort to reach the next round. The Carabao Cup, however, remains their best bet to win a trophy this season.
After a stuttering start to the season, Newcastle are sixth in the table with 20 points, and they will be aiming for a top-four finish yet again.
Newcastle fans suffered a lot during the Mike Ashley era. However, there is an air of optimism and positivity around the club at the moment.
