Chris Sutton suggests that it has been a “disappointing” night for Celtic as they lost 2-0 against Lazio in the Champions League.
The Bhoys needed a win in Rome to keep their hopes alive of reaching the knock-out stages, but following the defeat they will now finish at the bottom.
It looked like the Bhoys would manage at least a draw, but two late goals from Ciro Immobile earned a victory for the home side.
Unlike the previous game, where Celtic lost 6-0 against Atletico Madrid, this time they did put up a resilient performance.
However, Sutton says that it was “not good enough” in the end. While Lazio were “bang average”, Celtic still couldn’t match them.
“A predictably disappointing night. Can’t get away from it that as Champions League groups go this was a gentle one and one point from five games in this group is not good enough. The team tonight really lacked physicality as well as real belief against a bang average Lazio,” wrote Sutton on X.
As a result of this win, Lazio are sitting comfortably at the top of Group E, two points above Atletico Madrid, who faced Feyenoord in Rotterdam later on Tuesday.
Under Brendan Rodgers, Celtic have been really poor in the Champions League this season, where lack of discipline and concentration have cost them badly.
Sutton is spot on that Lazio were bang average but Celtic were guilty for not taking their chances. They lost concentration towards the end and played out some sloppy passes.
After an insipid first half, Celtic improved after the break. Kyogo Furuhashi came close to scoring for the Hoops before Yang Hyun-jun could have also done better.
