Aston Villa have moved above Manchester City in the Premier League after they earned a 1-0 win at Villa Park on Wednesday night (6 December).
Gary Lineker took to X to share his instant reaction after the game. The BBC pundit says Pep Guardiola’s side were thoroughly “outplayed”, as Villa picked up all three points.
Leon Bailey’s deflected shot earned Villa all three points but really the scoreline doesn’t reflect just how good Villa were during the game. Lineker rightly said that it was a s”superb” performance from Villa, and they deserve the victory.
“It’s been an awfully long time since Manchester City were so comprehensively outplayed in every department. A superb performance from Aston Villa. Well played,” wrote Lineker on X.

Villa Park was rocking tonight and the players didn’t disappoint. The players stuck to the plans, and they created the better chances. Douglas Luiz could have added a goal to his name in the end but his shot had hit the woodwork.
It was a disciplined performance from Villa where every player pressed hard and stuck to their task. Manchester City are going through a mini-crisis at the moment and it seems they are missing Rodri badly.
They have now gone four Premier League games without a win for the first time in the last five years, and Guardiola is probably feeling the pressure.
But whatever it is, nothing can deflect the narrative other than an outstanding performance which shows what a tremendous job Emery has done since taking over from Steven Gerrard.
Villa were fearless and tested goalkeeper Ederson through Paul Torres and Bailey. Likewise, Emi Martinez was kept busy and he made some fantastic saves to deny Erling Haaland. With that win, the Villans have now won 14 consecutive home Premier League matches.
