Newcastle United are considering a potential move for David de Gea as they fear Nick Pope could be out for a while, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Pope picked up an injury while against Manchester United on Saturday in the Premier League, and his absence is a major blow for Eddie Howe.
De Gea, who won one Premier League title with the Red Devils, is emerging as one potential option for the Magpies. He left Manchester United in the summer after 12 years at Old Trafford but as of now, he hasn’t found a new club.
The Daily Mail claims that De Gea would appeal to United given the fact that he would be available immediately and that he would not require a transfer fee.
He was on £375,000-per-week during his final contract at Manchester United and may have to accept a pay cut if he wants to be at St James’ Park.
Keith Downie update
The Sky Sports journalist has provided an update on Pope’s injury. He has picked up a shoulder injury and it looks like he will need an operation.
In that case, the 31-year-old goalkeeper could miss upto 4-5 months of action. He has been in “brilliant” form this season, and losing him for a lengthy period is a massive blow for the club.
Pope fell awkwardly while trying to save a late shot from United. In his absence, Howe will look at Martin Dubravka & Loris Karius to step up.
De Gea is a vastly experienced goalkeeper and he would be a brilliant addition to the side, if the Magpies can sort out his wages.
