Newcastle United could attempt to sign Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admitted on Friday (8 December) that while he admires Phillips as a professional, he can’t think of him while selecting his side. In a way, it means, Phillips is not in his plans anymore.
The Magpies could be looking to sign a new midfielder with Sandro Tonali banned for the rest of the season. Phillips has managed only 89 minutes of Premier League football this season, and it looks like he is going to leave the club in January.
Newcastle are not the only one who are keen to get his signature, but Romano expects that the situation of Phillips is one to watch out for in the coming weeks.
Exit looks likely
Phillips must leave Man City and join a club where he will get regular games. He was a hero at Leeds United where he flourished under Marcelo Bielsa.
The 28-year-old was one of the top players for England in Euro 2020, but how quickly things have changed for him. Gareth Southgate has shown unbelievable loyalty by picking him in the national team when he has barely played for his club.
Phillips joined City on a big-money move but it just didn’t work out for him. Last season he managed 21 games in all competitions, with injuries restricting his appearances. This season, he has been left completely frozen out by the club.
He has loads of Premier League experience and could be a really smart signing for the Magpies. However, Newcastle may look to get him on loan with an option to buy him permanently next summer. Having said that, other clubs could join the race.
Newcastle are ravaged by injuries this season and Eddie Howe has been left with no option but to delve into the transfer market to bolster the squad. However, they cannot make big purchases keeping in mind their Financial Fair Play limits.
