Newcastle United have earmarked Kalvin Phillips as their “priority” in the January transfer window, as per Inews.
The Magpies lost 2-1 against AC Milan as their Champions League campaign ended in a heartbreak. They finished bottom of the table with five points, and won’t be playing in the Europa League as well.
Eddie Howe is under no pressure to lose the job and he retains the support of everyone at the club, including the players. There is a feeling at the club that injuries have played a major role, and in the end, the players and the manager were left devastated following a return to the Champions League after long years of absence.
The Magpies need to bolster their squad in the January window, and they have been heavily linked with Phillips who has dropped down the pecking order at the club.
Destined to leave
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said earlier this month (8 December) that Phillips is not a part of his plans even though he respects him highly as a professional.
The Magpies need to bolster their midfielder after Sandro Tonali was banned for the rest of the season. Phillips has managed only 89 minutes of Premier League football this season, and after Guardiola’s comment, it is evident that his future lies elsewhere.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle will look to sign him permanently or on loan. The 28-year-old midfielder was one of the top performers for England in Euro 2020, and he excelled at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa. However, his career has taken a massive dip after he joined City, a move that didn’t work for him at all.
He has got plenty of experience playing in the Premier League and could be a fantastic addition to the club. He would welcome the opportunity to play under a quality manager like Eddie Howe who has dismissed talk that the deal was already done for Phillips.
