Celtic battle West Brom to sign Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt

Celtic are in the race to sign Leeds United attacker Joe Gelhardt in the January transfer window, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist claims via Patreon that a host of clubs are keen to sign the Whites attacker including the Bhoys.

Scottish giants Rangers and Championship outfit West Brom are looking to sign the “dynamic” 21-year-old. The Baggies, however, want to sign him on loan only.

Celtic are confident of signing Nicholas Kuhn this week but Brendan Rodgers is still looking to sign a few players, possibly on loan. In that case, Gelhardt could be a good option for the Hoops.

The Whites are ready to send him on loan, provided the full wages are covered by the club, as per Nixon.

Should Celtic move for him?

The Hoops are leading the Scottish Premiership table by eight points from Rangers, but the Gers have played two games less. They can easily cut the gap down to two points, and the title race could go down to the wire.

Celtic have been very disappointing in European competition this season, and Rodgers should be looking to rebuild the squad to his taste. He is also looking to sign a left-back and a striker, which means Gelhardt could be targeted at some point.

While Daniel Farke has suggested that Gelhardt remains a part of his plans, his stats suggest otherwise. He has made only two starts in the Championship while a further four appearances have come from the bench.

With game time hard to come by, it makes sense for Gelhardt to move to Parkhead in search of regular games, although it can’t be guaranteed.

When Gelhardt burst onto the scene, everyone expected him to flourish at Leeds. The loan move to Sunderland didn’t turn out to be a big success either. However, he is very young, and Rodgers has a habit of doing wonders with talented young players.
