Chelsea could do business this week before the January transfer window closes at 11 pm on Thursday, and they remain keen on Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
Villa manager Unai Emery is not his biggest fan but the Blues do like him and have held talks over doing a deal.
The Midlands club have to raise funds before the end of June to stay compliant with profit and sustainability rules, and they could be forced to sell Duran in the coming days.
The Colombian is currently injured but it does not rule out a January deal as Chelsea mainly see him as a talent for the future.
The Stamford Bridge club are convinced that Duran possesses vast potential but they want Villa to reduce their asking price for the 20-year-old.
He moved to Villa Park from MLS club Chicago Fire last January and has scored four goals in 35 appearances.
Duran bagged 15 league goals across two seasons in Categoria Primera A club Envigado and Chicago Fire, and he is keen to play regularly in the Premier League to prove himself.
Whether Chelsea can give him that opportunity remains to be seen, but they admire his qualities and are convinced he has what it takes to become a Premier League star.
Duran has plenty of pace to burn, which makes him a real threat in counterattacks, while his finishing and defensive contributions are skills Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino admires in his players.
Chelsea also have Financial Fair Play issues of their own as they have been splashing the cash of recent, but they are ready to make room in their budget for the recruitment of the South American this month.
They are also keeping tabs on Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton after he impressed them when both clubs met in the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup back in November, and their sporting director sporting director Paul Winstanley watched him in action last week.
