Fulham could join race to sign Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly being chased by a host of clubs in the January transfer window.

The Denmark international joined Spurs in the summer of 2020 and has made over 160 appearances in all competitions. However, under Ange Postecoglou, he has managed only five starts in the Premier League this season.

According to a report from The Telegraph, several clubs are vying for his signature and Fulham are one of them. The Cottagers showed interest in signing Hojbjerg last summer and they “would be expected to be in the race” for the 28-year-old if they need a midfielder.

Serie A club Napoli, managed by former Watford manager Walter Mazzarri, are looking to bolster their defensive midfield areas and they are interested in signing him as well.

Tottenham may need him this month, especially in the absence of Yves Bissouma and Pape Mate Sarr, both are participating in the African Cup of Nations. However, a potential exit cannot be ruled out, as we approach the deadline day.

Should Spurs sell him?

Hojbjerg is an experienced defensive midfielder but Spurs have enough depth and quality in midfield. The former Southampton midfielder still has plenty of football left in him and should be a good addition for Fulham who can offer him regular game time.

Likewise, a move to Italy could suit his style as well. In the Premier League, games are played at a fast pace, and midfielders need to be physically sharp to maintain a certain level of consistency. It would be unfair to say that Hojbjerg has waned, but he would be more suited now in the Italian league.

Having said that, his £110k-per-week wages could be a big problem for clubs looking to sign him this month. He has a contract at the club until 2025, and Spurs are under no pressure to sell him.

This has been a busy transfer window for Spurs. They have signed Timo Werner on loan and Radu Dragusin on a permanent deal. They could look to add another winger or an attacking midfielder to their ranks before the end of this month.
