Forgotten Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has emerged as a potential target for Fulham, who are determined to shore up their defensive department this month.
Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg reports that the idea of a potential loan deal for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign has been floated around.
Fulham are also expected to retain an option to make the purchase permanent at the end of the season, but the Cottagers are yet to submit a formal proposal to Chelsea.
We’re already into the second half of the season, and Chalobah is yet to make his debut under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino.
The 24-year-old has suffered from recurring injury problems and hasn’t even made Pochettino’s matchday squad since the start of the season.
Chalobah is nearing a return to full fitness, but his long-term future at Stamford Bridge has been subject to increased speculation since last summer.
He had interest from a couple of European heavyweights, including Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and AC Milan, but a move never materialised.
Links to Bayern have resurfaced this month, but the Bundesliga title holders have reinforced their backline with the addition of Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur.
Interest in Chalobah has cooled since last summer, but Fulham have emerged as a potential destination for the defender, who is likely to struggle for playing time upon his return to the fold.
Pochettino has settled on a back four of Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva, Axel Disasi and Malo Gusto.
Vice-captain Ben Chilwell has also returned from injury and could take over left-back duties from Colwill, who will battle the already-established duo alongside Benoit Badiashile for a centre-back slot.
Chalobah is highly likely to be left out in the cold, but Fulham could offer the Englishman an escape route from Stamford Bridge without leaving West London.
Fulham are expected to lose contract rebel Tosin Adarabioyo either this month or at the end of the season amid reports the soon-to-be free agent is edging closer to a move to Inter.
