Leeds United in hunt to sign Calvin Ramsay on loan

Leeds United are looking to sign a new right-back in the January transfer window, and they have earmarked Calvin Ramsay as a potential option.

According to a report from the Daily Mail (printed edition, 18 January), the Whites are considering the 20-year-old as an option. The Whites are also considering Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams and West Ham’s Ben Johnson as other options.

Ramsay, who joined Liverpool from Aberdeen, returned to Anfield earlier this week having spent the first half of the season at Championship side Preston North End.

The young defender has made two senior appearances under Jurgen Klopp during a debut campaign at Anfield. His growth and development were cut short by an injury that required surgery last February.

Need for a defender

Ramsay would be a smart addition to Leeds. He is an “exciting” young talent, and Klopp rates him highly.

At Liverpool, it is really difficult for him to break into the starting line-up, mainly due to the presence of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Joe Gomez is another option for the Reds.

Klopp will be more than happy to send the youngster on loan again provided he gets regular games. Daniel Farke needs new full-backs, following the departures of Luke Ayling and Djede Spence.

Ayling has joined Middlesbrough on loan, while Spence has returned to his parent club who again sent him on loan to Genoa.

Ramsey is on £15k-per-week deal at Anfield and Leeds should be able to cover his wages.

The Whites have been linked with Johnson who can play on both flanks, but they need to pay a certain amount of loan fee to get him away from West Ham.

It will be interesting to see if Leeds make a formal offer to sign Ramsay. In case, they do, Liverpool shouldn’t mind sending him away on loan to Elland Road for the rest of the season.
