Manchester United are keeping tabs on Bologna striker, Joshua Zirkzee as they look to salvage goalscoring woes, according to a report from Football Transfers.
Despite having a remarkable Champions League campaign with five goals, summer signing, Rasmus Hojlund has failed to impress in the Premier League since his €74m move from Atalanta in the summer. The 20-year-old only recently hit the back of the net in the 3-2 comeback win over Aston Villa while firing blank in 14 appearances.
Hence, United has earmarked Zirkzee whose remarkable performances in the Serie A have propelled Bologna to fifth place in Serie A this season. With eight goals across all competitions this season, Football Transfers reports that Zirkzee is being courted by European top clubs including AC Milan, Newcastle United and Napoli.
Zirkzee, 22, has a contract at The Renato Dall’Ara Stadium that runs until 2026 and is being valued at €30m (£25.8m) by Transfermarkt.
Should the Red Devils move for Zirkzee?
Erik ten Hag’s side are experiencing a below-par season by their standards. Their goalscoring woes are evident in their 22 goals in the Premier League this season, the fewest of any team in the top half of the table.
United have now set their sights on Zirkzee to help solve their goalscoring problems. However, a move in January seems unlikely as Bologna will need their best players to have a chance at challenging for the top four.
The Red Devils are also grappling with Financial Fair Play regulations, hindering significant investments in the squad. Selling players becomes a prerequisite before any substantial spending is possible.
A loan deal for Zirkzee appears unrealistic, as it is highly unlikely that Bologna will agree to his departure this month.
The Netherland u21 International brings qualities that align with Ten Hag’s transitional system. His physicality, ability to exploit space, and finishing prowess position him as an indispensable potential starter for United.
It remains to be seen if United will test their resolve by making a move for the Dutchman or risk facing competition for the striker by waiting until summer.
