Tottenham Hotspur have been remarkably well in the January transfer window but it seems they are keen to do more business.
Spurs have already signed Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig and they have an option to sign him permanently next summer. The north London club have also signed Radu Dragusin from Italian club Genoa.
With two signings done, the attention now shifts towards signing a new midfielder. According to a report from Northern Echo, Tottenham have emerged as the latest club to register an interest in signing Phillips.
Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a move for the 28-year-old in January who will be allowed to leave the club, either on loan or permanently. In case, he leaves on loan, Manchester City are refusing to lower their demands for a £7m loan fee. Plus, they want a guarantee that they will sign Phillips, who is on £150k-per-week wages, permanently next summer.
Should Spurs sign Phillips?
Phillips joined Man City on a big money deal from Leeds but the move didn’t turn out well for him. He has struggled badly to get regular games under Pep Guardiola and has not made a single Premier League start this season.
He is keen to leave the club in January as he seeks regular game time. He wants to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s Euros in Germany, and for that, he needs to play regularly. The defensive midfielder has loads of Premier League experience and his quality is undeniable.
But unless City lower their demands, it makes very little sense for Spurs to invest in Phillips. They have been linked with Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher while Wolves defensive midfielder Joao Gomes could be another option.
However, if Spurs can agree a deal for Phillips on loan where they won’t have to pay anything or a measly fee, without the obligation to buy him, then it makes sense for them to go after the former Leeds United midfielder.
