Ben Godfrey drools over Everton teammate Ashley Young

Everton badly need to return to winning ways after the poor start to the new year.

The Toffees are yet to win a single game in the Premier League post-Christmas, and this must be concerning for their manager, Sean Dyche.

Despite being docked ten points, the Toffees have shown great fighting spirit this season. However, they have struggled a bit and need to pick up a win in the crucial win against Crystal Palace who are likely to sack Roy Hodgson before the weekend.

Ben Godfrey is one of those players who has made a strong impression in recent games. He had to wait for his chances, but now the defender has looked like returning to his old best.

Speaking in an interview with, Godfrey has showered praise on his teammate Ashley Young.

Godfrey says that the 38-year-old defender sets high standards in training and that it’s “ridiculous” how he keeps performing at the top level.

“Youngy is someone I like to spend a lot of time with,” says Godfrey.

“For me, the biggest thing I’ve taken from him is his emphasis on standards. Standards every day in training are so important. When you have a player who has done what Youngy has done through his career, you see how high the standard they set is and how consistently they hit them. I’ve tried to replicate that over the past year.

“Me and Seamus were having this conversation… When Youngy plays, it’s ridiculous to think that he’s 38 years old. It’s madness. He has the knowledge of a 38 year old – you can see that when he plays because he always knows where to be – but then he makes everything look so easy. Physically, he still looks like he could go for years. In the nicest way possible, he’s a freak!”

Eyebrows were raised when cash-strapped Everton signed Young during the summer transfer window.

Young has a wealth of experience having played for Aston Villa, Manchester United and Inter Milan but whether he had the energy and legs to play at this stage of his career was a big question.

He has made 18 starts in the Premier League this season and has forged a strong partnership with Godfrey in defence.

Godfrey has been left stunned by Young’s fitness and the standard he sets on the training ground every single day. Dyche will hope that Young stays fit for the rest of the season and help the Toffees climb up the table.
