Liverpool have contacted the agent of Xabi Alonso, with Bayer Leverkusen also informed directly

Liverpool have contacted Inaki Ibanez – the agent of Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso – and the board of the Bundesliga club have also been informed, according to Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk.

The Reds want the Spaniard to replace Jurgen Klopp after the German leaves at the end of the campaign, but Leverkusen are confident that Alonso will reject their offer, with his current contract with them expiring in 2026.

Liverpool have made a concrete move by getting in touch with the agent of their former midfielder, but that is only the first step as the Spaniard will now have to make a decision.

Bayern Munich also want Alonso to replace Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, and the 42-year-old has to decide which of his former clubs to return to or whether to remain at Leverkusen.

Liverpool also have German national team manager Julian Nagelsmann and Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim on their radar, but Alonso is top of their wishlist, with the wonderful job he has done since joining the current Bundesliga leaders very impressive.

Leverkusen have also set a new German record for consecutive competitive matches without loss after going 33 games without defeat, and the Anfield club are convinced he is the best man to succeed Klopp.

While joining Liverpool will be attractive to Alonso, having a club like Bayern also interested in recruiting his services makes things complicated.

The Reds are also still in search of a new sporting director, which would have a huge say in who eventually lands the job.

Going by the various polls across the internet, a majority of Liverpool fans want Alonso, but whether he feels the same is unknown given the choices ahead of him this summer.

More clubs could also enter the race for his services in the coming weeks as managerial changes are expected in some of the big clubs in Europe before next season.
