Alan Shearer blown away by Newcastle United duo v West Ham

Newcastle United produced arguably one of their best performance of the season as they secured a dramatic 4-3 win against West Ham on Saturday (30 March) in the Premier League at St James’ Park.

The Magpies started the game strongly with Alexander Isak scoring early for the Magpies from spot-kick. Some pundits suggested that Anthony Gordon was offside, but after a lengthy VAR check, the initial penalty decision wasn’t overturned.

Michail Antonio restored parity after Lucas Paqueta found him in space with a delicious delivery. Mohammed Kudus then made it 2-1 at the break, and the Hammers applied more pressure in the second half and increased their lead, with Jarrod Bowen finding the target once again.

The Magpies kept on finding ways to come back, and they managed to pull one back with Isak converting another penalty. Harvey Barnes came on as a substitute in place of Miguel Almiron and changed the game by the scruff of the neck as he scored twice to send the Geordie fans into absolute pandemonium.

Alan Shearer was heavily impressed by two second-half substitutes, Harvey Barnes and Lewis Hall, as he lavished praise on them while speaking on Premier League TV productions after the game.

The Magpies legend said: “We said about the substitutions in the first half that I didn’t agree with. But you have got to give Eddie credit for the second half for the substitutions that he did make realising it wasn’t working.

“The subs made a huge difference. Barnes made a massive difference obviously with the goals. I thought Lewis Hall coming on the left-back was superb as well.”

The Magpies will take plenty of positives from this game, especially the character and desire shown by the players. Anthony Gordon will miss the next match after he picked a red card for collecting two yellows.

Barnes made a massive impact with his goals, but Hall deserves credit as well for his exceptional performance. Hall also impressed for England U-20 in midweek and he showed fantastic technical ability against West Ham.

Newcastle United could miss the trio of Jamaal Lascelles, Tino Livramento and Miguel Almiron for the next game after they all picked up injuries against West Ham.
