Alan Shearer drools over Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur are back in action against Luton Town on Saturday (30 March) in the Premier League after the international break.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are fifth in the Premier League table, three points behind Aston Villa who have played a game more.

Spurs are aiming to get into the Champions League next season and Postecoglou will need all his key players to deliver. James Maddison was with the England squad in recent friendly matches and did well in the 2-2 draw against Belgium.

Maddison will look to maintain great consistency for the rest of the season and impress his national boss so that he can book his place in the squad for Euro 2024. England legend Alan Shearer has suggested that the 27-year-old can be a “game-changing” option for Gareth Southgate, adding he is a “big fan” of the player.

“He came on against Belgium and did alright. Gareth has that option — and also Cole Palmer. We’re blessed with attacking players who can change a game. I’m a big fan of Maddison and I’d try to find a place for him in the squad so that he can provide a game-changing option,” wrote Shearer for The Athletic.

“If you add Bellingham and Foden into that equation, there are so many top-class players who can play as a No 10 or at least as an attacking midfielder and really influence matches.”

James Maddison is key for Tottenham

Maddison has scored four goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League this season. The attacking midfielder is the creative heartbeat for Spurs, but he should be influencing more with goals and assists.

England have players like Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden who are enjoying seasons for their respective clubs. Maddison could also face competition from West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, who is close to hitting 20 goals this season in all competitions.

Shearer is spot on here. Maddison can really influence the game from the bench, but his final selection will depend upon how he performs for Spurs for the rest of the season.
